A sexually abused child grows up to be a vicious serial killer who
imprisons his victims so that he may subject them to rape and torture
before killing them. Leonard keeps a scrapbook with photos and
memorabilia of his victims, in which he forces his captives to write of
their traumatic experiences with him before their death. The film,
based on actual events, chronicles the ordeal of Clara, Leonard’s latest
captive.
A strikingly shocking film, it is well photographed and acted, although
its disturbing nature is not for all audiences.
SCRAPBOOK is the most intensely cruel depiction of rape and torture that
this viewer has ever seen on film, and is not something that I would
want to watch again any time soon, or ever for that matter. However,
the film bravely takes responsibility for its subject matter by
displaying the events in a way that is raw, horrifying and ugly, rather
than glamorizing rape by displaying it in a romantic or erotic fashion.
The film is well done, but be prepared to have it haunt you for a long
time afterward.
