Review by The Horrorist for Horrorwatch.com
Leonard is a serial killer that keeps a scrapbook of his victims. He keeps pictures and forces his victims to write about what they’re feeling after he rapes and abuses them. His newest victim thinks she’s found a way to survive, using his own book against him.

SCRAPBOOK is a cinematic journey into the darkest of places. I am not a person that’s easily disturbed and I rarely feel anything for the victims in horror flicks. I’m a horror fan... I want things to get ugly, but not this ugly.

This movie is unbelievably disturbing. The rape and abuse scenes make I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE look like a lighthearted romp. You’re thinking I’m just saying that... I’m not.

Disturbing and affecting, SCRAPBOOK is an unflinching look into the world and mind of both a monster and his victim. And neither eye spares you anything.

It’s important to note that although I compare the rape scenes with I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, the movies are nothing alike, apart from an abundance of sexual violence. Don't read this thinking SCRAPBOOK is another rape/revenge flick - although there's plenty of both - that's not what the film is about.

Almost the entire flick is just the two of them, and both the characters and the actors playing them were excellent. Unlike most movies revolving around rape, the bad guy isn’t bad just for the hell of it. He’s not a one-dimensional paper character that’s pure evil just so we can accept how vicious he is. This movie is layer after layer of disturbing depth. Nobody was playing around when they made this movie. And nobody was going after a quick buck. The filmmakers were clearly more ambitious than most Hollywood productions will ever imagine.

I’m not even going to bother breaking the story up, or trying to emphasize how well each part of this film was done, or how powerful it turned out. The fact is, it’s not for everyone - and was never meant to be.

Hannibal Lector this isn’t. There is no nobility or grand evil at work. SCRAPBOOK is how ugly reality can be.

This is intense, dark, powerful, brutal stuff. It’s an ordeal to watch, and there are very few times in the movie when you get a break from it. It’s really an assault on the viewer, and not everybody is going to be able to handle that. If you think you can, and you’re the type of person that appreciates going somewhere no one wants to go, I highly recommend watching SCRAPBOOK.
